The "leaked" Death Note film script is a document that came into circulation online in 2009. Alleged to be the screenplay of the upcoming Death Note film remake, its authenticity is disputed.
Some time after this script's disclosure, it was announced that the actual film script would be written by Greek-American screenwriters Charley and Vlas Parlapanides. On January 13, 2011, it was revealed that Shane Black was hired to direct the film, with the script instead being written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.
However, on October 29, 2011, Black remarked during a panel in Long Beach Comic Con that the producers of Warner Bros. had in fact suggested Black to not only "lose the demon" but to also make drastic changes in the plot, resulting in Light being portrayed in a more benevolent fashion. He later assures fans that regardless of Warner Bros. wishes, he intends to be faithful to the manga's plot. Whether Black was making a reference to this film script or not is open to debate.
The script portrays protagonist Light Yagami as a Luke Murray,a Caucasian college student with incredible intellect. He is motivated to use the Death Note to rid the world of crime because of his mother’s death at the hands of a burglar.
Many significant characters in the manga are absent in this script, including Misa and Ryuk . However, Luke is implied to have received his notebook from a supernatural being, possibly a shinigami .
Unlike Light, Luke stops midway though his crusade, relinquishes ownership of the notebook, and returns to an ordinary life.
