Death Note is a live-action television drama that aired from July 2023 to May 2024 on AMC. It is based on the Death Note manga series but now set in the Midwest region of the US. The series was announced in July 2022 during Anime Matsuri and the first trailer was released in January 2023. Dylan Minnette stars as Light Emmerson and Ezra Miller as L.
Plot[]
Light Emmerson is a very intelligent high school student living in a world of rampant murder, rape and fraud. Though the world soon changes as one day, he finds a black notebook labeled "Death Note" on the ground outside of school. Soon he finds out that people who's name is written in the notebook die. He then begins his goal to eradicate criminals and bring justice and order once and for all. Meanwhile, the secret detective L fights to solve the case and catch him in a game of cat and mouse.
After the incident in the park, Light joins his father, Sam, in the Kira investigation alongside L. After a series of events, L, Light and the Taskforce soon discover a Second Kira among the world. Light soon meets the Second Kira and is shocked by what he sees. Maya Alfaro is an actress and model who also possesses a Death Note and a Shinigami. Light and Maya form a bond and vow to kill L. Unfortunately, L outwits Maya and captures her. With this outcome, Light comes with a plan to spawn a Third Kira.
4 years after L's Death, Detective Light Emmerson takes his place and leads the taskforce. With L gone, Light's New World Order is coming into fruition. Although, he soon discovers that L's legacy hasn't stopped just yet. With the Mafia wanting to acquire the notebook and the FBI starting their own investigation, Light and the Taskforce slowly lose control of the investigation. Slowly, the case unravels into a civil war between L's successors, Mello and Near. Light gathers recruitments of his own with his girlfriend, Maya, a disgruntled news reporter, Karen Thomas, and the prosecutor in Maya's case, Travis de la Cruz.

The series aired on AMC from July 6th, 2023 to May 16th, 2024.
A month after the finale, the entire series was released on HBO Max for free. It for a time was number 3 as the most rated series on he streaming service, just below Batman: The Animated Series and The Flash.
In October 13th, 2024, Japan released a collectors edition Blu-ray & DVD set that came with Seasons 1-3 (subtitled and dubbed), a printed booklet of the 2020 one-shot manga, a Death Note replica from the show itself and a Ryuk head bust.
In April 3rd, 2025, A Korean DVD set was released in South Korea. A Limited number of copies came with ticket prizes for the 2025 showing of Death Note: The Musical. Seasons 1-3 were subbed and dubbed in Korean. In that same year, South Korea's KBS released their own anime adaptation set in the Gyeonggi Province.
In October 10th, 2026, a self published novel by Nisio Isin, writer of Death Note: Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases, was released. Titled "Next Kira: Death Note", the story took place 2 years after the events of the final episode. The story follows two characters, the first is Near, who is now known as L, and a original character named Miles Achleitner, a rich Harvard student who is chosen to be the next Kira after Light Emmerson. The story is seemingly based off of the C-Kira story. The canonicity is this story is unknown.

The score was done by Saw composer Charlie Clouser and was released on the Death Note Original Soundtrack.
Trivia[]
- Some of the Japanese voice actors from the anime came back to dub their original characters again.
- Most of the German dub actors came from the German audio drama.
- On digital release, the French subtitles accidently had Daniella Emmerson's name misspelled as "Daniel Emmerson." This was fixed 2 weeks later.
